Javelle Clarke’s second-half goal was enough to seal the win for Gainsborough Trinity in a frustrating defeat for the Robins on Tuesday night in the Pitching In Northern Premier League.
After an open first-half, the visitors had the chance to take the lead just moments before the break. Jon Margetts won a penalty after former Gainsborough man Dylan Wharton brought him down in the box, although the Trinity number nine was denied by the woodwork from 12-yards and the opening half remained goalless.
Gainsborough did not have to wait long to find the back of the net after the restart as Clarke put the Holy Blues ahead with a cushioned finish from close-range in the 58th minute.
An attacking change for Ilkeston Town saw new recruits Robbie Fox and Dylan Youmbi enter the field but the score remained one-nil, despite a late push for an equalising goal, as the referee called full-time at the Microlise New Manor Ground.
