Two first half goals proved to be a killer blow as we fell to a 3-1 defeat at Workington AFC at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
Conceding two in the first 10 minutes was always going to give the Robins a mountain to climb, although there was some positive football in the opening period.
Anthony Dwyer did manage to pull one back just after the restart, but a penalty 10 minutes later sealed the deal for Workington.
The opener came as a result of some intricate play from the reds four minutes in, with a series of passes resulting in Luke Hunter converting from close- range.
Hunter then doubled his tally for the afternoon six minutes later, converting after bringing down a long throw, which caused issues for the Ilkeston rearguard.
Dwyer created the first real chance for the Robins after 25 minutes as he played a ball into Ash Hunter, although the latter could only loop an effort over the net.
Ilkeston’s top scorer was involved again five minutes later, as he played a ball into Sam Newell who was able to drive forward before striking an effort narrowly wide of the post.
It was the lively Dwyer who reduced the deficit a few minutes into the second period, as he latched onto a pass from Hunter, before opening himself up and firing past Alex Mitchell.
However, the hosts would restore their two-goal cushion after 56 minutes after Brennan Dickenson converted from the penalty spot.
Chances were hard to come by in the latter stages of the second half for the Robins, with our best opening coming through Dylan Reason as his strong effort forced a stop from Mitchell.
Workington were able to comfortably see out the victory, condemning us to a fourth successive defeat.
We return to action in the FA Trophy on the 26th of September, as we look to get back to winning ways.
