With a little under three weeks to go until the start of the Northern Premier League season, Tris Whitman’s Robins return to the Microlise New Manor Ground on Tuesday evening to host Shepshed Dynamo.
Another important pre-season test awaits the new-look Robins as they welcome familiar opposition from Butthole Lane, with the fixture carrying a unique connection between the two clubs.
A huge mutual respect has existed between the Ilkeston and Shepshed fanbases since the home fixture in the 2010/11 season. In the years since, that relationship has continued to grow through charity supporters’ matches, half-and-half scarves and even commemorative half-and-half shirts, making Tuesday night’s fixture one that means more than just the football on the pitch.
With just three pre-season fixtures remaining before the league campaign gets underway, the match presents another valuable opportunity for Whitman and his management team to continue implementing their style of play, while also assessing the performances of those trialists hoping to earn a place in the squad ahead of the new season.
